Hongi

May 31st-June 2nd
We headed farther South on the West coast to Ahipara. Another small surf town with a gas station and take a way (small fried food restaurant). The weather turned sour with a strong SouthWesterly system from Antarctica. With sustained winds of 120kph we stayed another night. When Shadow renewed our room at the hostel, the gentleman said that this town would be packed by dark. Little did we know, this small surf town has the second best left break surf in the World. Sure enough, by the afternoon surfers were everywhere and the waves were big.
The weather cleared and we headed toward Omopere. We ended up loving the backpacker (hostel) so much we stayed for 3 nights. The owner, Sue, drove us about 6 miles South so we could hike back along the rugged beach and cliffs. Large rocks covered parts of the beach with perfectly round tidal pools. The next day was filled by taking a bone carving class with a local Maori. He and his wife treated us like family by inviting us into their home, feeding us lunch, and teaching the craft of carving. He explained the meanings of traditional carvings and encouraged us to make our own. When we arrived home, the hostel was buzzing with new guests. The evening was relaxing with good conversations.
