Day 8
I woke this morning with a bit of a belly ache. To head off a disaster, I quickly took 2 Imodium and 1 Cipro.
After breakfast we headed out of town for a short hike. Our reward was a beautiful waterfall. A cave hid behind the falls where bats hung sleeping. Being a little groggy from the antibiotics, I stayed in the shallow enjoying the lizards.
With a few hours free back in town BJ and I wanted to grab a quick bite to eat and buy a piece of art we had seen the day before. As with most Cuban meals, they take time. Our relaxing afternoon turned into an episode of the Amazing Race. We arrived at our first bank only to find it had closed 10 minutes earlier than normal. After finding another bank, then rushing to back to buy our art, we made it to our homestay just in time to take the afternoon bus to the beach.
Zarelys, our guide had arranged a perfect picnic on the beach. We had time to swim and walk the waters edge before sunset. Our entertainment was a grandfather played the guitar, his son played the bongos, and his grandson played the maracas. An impromptu bonfire while we feasted on a large Red Snapper with typical Cuban sides.
We had read before coming to bring lots of bug spray, but so far we have had no problems except for the midges on the beach. None of the homes here have screens on the windows either. The government comes around and smokes every house for mosquitoes.
Back in town BJ and Eric enjoyed a cigar on the patio while Laurie and I went out to find live music. There's a street in Trinidad that was once used as a look out for pirate ships. The cobblestone street ends with a wide set of stairs. This is the main gathering point in town. Free live music plays with salsa dancing. It a great mix of locals and tourists.
