Breathe in the Air

October 2 Mile 2166-
Well, we made it through the 100 mile wilderness and across the Penobscot River at Abol Bridge, ME. There's one thing left to do and that is to climb Mt. Katahdin. The day was cold and misty which made our last day in the wilderness challenging. The rocks and roots were slick and the muddy bogs were deep. Our mini bubble which includes: Jerriatrics, Steady, Flame, Pigeon, Die Hard, Spice Cadet, and us scraped and clawed our way through. Tonight we sit roasting marshmallows and drinking beer around a camp fire waiting to see what the weather does.
We have a 10 mile hike tomorrow to the last campsite at the base of Katahdin. We have heard that the last 10 miles are more like a victory lap.
Baxter State Park is home to the mountain. Most wouldn't think it, but this mountain has some extreme weather. The park labels the weather conditions into classes 1-4. Class 1 being a perfect day and Class 4 means that all trails are closed. The final 5 miles of the AT has a 4,100 foot elevation change. If the last 2166 miles are any indication, the climb will be both hard and rewarding.
