O Brother Where Are Thou

May 6th
Our morning started early since we had 11+ miles to hike. It was a1,700 foot change in elevation for the first 2 miles which kicked our butts. The old dirt road we follow has no switch backs so the ascents and descents are more difficult than we had anticipated. Once on the ridge line with a view of both sides of the island, we came across 2 bison. They were grazing about 5 feet from the trail. After taking a few photos the three of us decided the safest way to pass would be together. Shadow lead while I brought up the rear. In preparation of being chased off the cliff I unbuckled both straps of my backpack thinking I would drop it and run faster than the others. Thankfully the bison simply lifted their heads and sniffed us as we scrambled by.
During a break on one of the mountain tops Shadow found a nice place for his brother Joey's remains. With a cairn that mark the spot. It was another beautiful day on the island with views of the steep cliffs which touch the ocean.
Lunch was at the only restaurant in Two Harbors. We relaxed, stuffed our faces with burgers and chili fries while debating on spending another day here. It was 2:30 before leaving the cafe and we had another 5.2 miles to go.
Few people get to experience the interior of Catalina due to the limited number of vehicles and roads. The TCT is an unbelievable trail that gives you an up close taste of California. The sun was setting when we arrived to Little Harbor for the night. This is a place I could spend a couple of days. There's a bus that brings people here from Avalon. Mature palm tree cover the camping area and the cove has a great beach that hugs the cliffs. It's perfect for surfers, kayaker, and paddle boarders. With running water, port-o-potties, and picnic tables, you wouldn't need much to have a great weekend. Plus you can have firewood delivered.
We were too tired to make dinner so sandwiches and protein bars were the menu. 2 days left and Shadow is already talking about real estate and finding a job here.
