When the first snow hits the mountain top here, the locals call it Termination Snow. With that, we packed our things and started our way back to the “Lower 48s”. For a change of pace we took the Cassiar Hwy South instead of the Alaska Highway. Two are similar being that they are 2-lane and paved for the most park, but the Cassiar has even less traffic but more Canadian Provincial Parks. We bounced down to the little town of Hyder, AK. When I say little, I mean LITTLE! Once on the cutoff road to get there the scenery changes dramatically with tower coastal mountains, tall waterfalls, and white glaciers. Back on the main road we came across the ideal BC town of Smithers. Hiking, Skiing, Fishing, and a municipal RV park right on the river. Who could ask for anything more. We stayed 3 days exploring the area and downtown shops before making the last push to the border.
As usual our normal “hotel” while on the road are Walmart or Lowes parking lots. Bellingham, WA was no different. We parked unhooked the Toad and heading to Costco to restock from our trip through Canada. The place was packed with people from British Columbia buying things to bring back. At first glance I thought we had missed the news about the World ending. Costco carts were over flowing!
Next stop was Portland, OR where we spent a few days downtown exploring before heading back East to visit friends and family before finishing our trip in Carmel, CA for the Winter.
