Guerrero Negro - Santa Rosalia, Baja, Mexico

The beach camping offered a Gray whale sighting tour.  We are not tour people and I was a little skeptic about bothering the wildlife, like the sad elephants in Nepal.  The Mexican government regulates the tour boats heavily and no private boats are allowed.  A small wooden boat built for 10 people picked us and a French couple up at the end of a dock.  With your binoculars on shore you could see the whales blowing and breaching the surface.  This quiet estuary is a perfect place to nourish and teach their babies before the long migration.  The little outboard motor took us into the Laguna Oro de Libre.  Our captain spends the Winter here and the Summer working construction in Tennessee.  He turned the motor off and we sat like a bobber.  The mother whales and their babies would gradually get closer.  The mother would dive under the boat and the baby would follow.  She exhaled under boat and the force of air would shake the boat.  They would roll on their back as if to scratch their bellies.  Hundreds of whales migrate here, but only a few are interested in the boats.  Our captain said that sometimes he brings people out and there are no friendly whales.  The time flew by and as another small boat came we left.  It was truly the most amazing wildlife encounter I have ever had
