Lessons from John

October 30th-December 26th
Shadow doesn’t believe in luck.  He says that we create our own happiness.  And that’s what we did.  Our friends Becky and Kelly hosted a welcome home/bon voyage party for us and 3 of our hiker friends joined in (Peppermint, Coaster, and Warbler).  Of course it wouldn’t be a new beginning without Shadow shaving his 7 month beard at the party.
After a week or two of tinkering, cleaning, and inspecting our new home I got a flying job with a private charter company.  We quickly visited Shadow’s mother, Joyce in Greeneville, TN and then to Dallas, TX for some time with the grandsons and some friends from the Appalachian Trail (Flame and Jerryatric).
We rushed to pack what we could into our new home and the rest into a storage unit at my parents place before I headed out for three weeks of training.  My parents invited Shadow to Elizabethtown, KY while I was in school.  The three of them worked hard remodeling the RV.  The first thing to go were the dated floral  fabric that covered windows, couch, and dinette.  As with any remodel, the more they replace, the more needed to be replaced.  After it was all said and done, we ended up with new living room cabinets, carpet in the bunk room, dinette table, binds for the windows, driver and passenger seats, and a operating generator.
While in school, Shadow called to inform me of a small wrench in our grand scheme.  My beloved Subaru (Stubie) would not be able to join us on our journey.  Neither of us realized that you couldn’t tow an AWD vehicle.  This was one of many small wrenches he encountered during the remodel.  It’s safe to say that becoming a full-timer has a steep learning curve.  Not being able to take Stubie left us with our 1986 4-runner.  Shadow put a for sale sign in the window and waited.  I had returned home in time for Christmas and without a buyer Shadow and my dad began fabricating a device to take it with us.  Just as the final touches we being added to our new home, a  buyer pulled into the driveway.  We parted with the 4-runner that we had purchased twice within the last 7 years (long story) and decided to leave without a vehicle in tow.
Lesson 5:  A vehicle being towed by an RV is called a toad.
