We spent our last night in the Southland section of the Te Araroa Mavaro Lakes Campsite. A gorgeous mountain lake where family spend weekends and summer vacations. A couple of boats where out tubing and skiing when we settled into to camp. A young boy and girl came over to say hello and ended up talking way past our dinner time. Our discussions were over differences in Jolly Ranchers and Barley Sugars. Biscuits versus cookies. Tea versus Dinner.
Another great day with dry feet, although sore because of our long day yesterday. We continued down the massive valley passing the lake and following the river. We met our 4th SoBo (Southbounder) this afternoon. Technology is amazing. Most trampers (hikers) communicate via the Te Araroa Facebook page. So it l's weird to meet people from around the world after seeing them on Facebook.
We hiked a few kilometers passed our stopping point today to make tomorrow easier. We are now in Otago. The second section in the South Island heading to Queenstown. After the last section being more remote than expected we decided to buy a personal locator beacon. After calling a few places in Te Anau, it was much cheaper to buy one on Amazon and have it shipped from the States. That gives us time to enjoy the self proclaimed adventure capital of the World.
