The days are long here. Sunrise is around 6am and the sunsets around 10pm. It's hard to tell time by the sun because it never really moves. My cooking privileges are about to be taken away. In the last few days we have had Alfredo Noodle soup, mashed potato soup, rice and bean soup, and lastly hummus soup for lunch. I obviously need to start measuring the water for our recipes. The sky opened up early this morning an continued the down pour for about two hours. Our research was correct about the weather here. It moves in fast and moves out fast. By sunrise, the sky was clear. Lunch time the wind whipped about 35kts with a low cloud layer and by 3pm we were putting on sunscreen. It's our last full day in the Longwood Forest. We decided to only hike 10.5 miles today in order to rehab our bodies and equipment. The hike through the forest was similar to the weather. Yesterday was a rainforest with ferns. Today was moss covered woods that made me feel like I was in Alice and Wonderland. It was a soggy mess. What looked like moss covered rocks were just large clumps of moss. The trees had no leaves, just more moss. Our camp spot this evening is on Bald Hill. appropriately named. No trees makes for a boggy hike. Moose would loveit here. For my AT friends out there, just imagine Maine without a trail and add in some Vermont mud.
Shadow is going to download an app on birds of NZ the next time we are in town. They sing the most beautiful songs here. Maybe we should do a "Big Year" (where you see as many different birds as you can in one year). Two more days to town.
