We completely miss calculated our time to Arthur's Pass for our next food box. I think we counted 2 extra days of food. Our box in the pass has 8 days. Mom and Dad sent us our second pair of shoes with some of our favorite candy. Skittles, PayDay bars, and Jolly Ranchers. Those of course will be going with us and the New Zealand candy will be forwarded on to Wellington.
Arthur's Pass is a one shop town with 2 restaurants and 2 hostels. While going through our food box we meet 3 more SoBos (South Bounders). A couple from Germany and a guy from Singapore. For most of the evening we talked about all things Te Araroa. Once again bring back Appalachian Trail memories.
Walking back from dinner we spotted our first up close Kea. He was walking the parking like a raccoon searching for scraps of food. His tag brackets drug the ground like a probation anklet.
A filling breakfast and we were off for another 7-8 days. Come hell or high water, we were determined not to get our new shoes wet. We rock hop up the Minga Valley to Goat Pass Hut for the night. Tomorrow will be wet shoes day. The weight of food for 8 days made for some unhappy hikers, but the walk and views were totally different than what we have seen. The landscape was more tropical with a variety of different colors of green. A big change from the high desert we have been walking in lately. Fingers are crossed to see the flightless nocturnal national bird...The Kiwi!
