I was so busy writing about all the people we have met recently that I forgot to mention two important things. One is that we have have 2000 kilometers to go and two, we have entered the last section of the South Island, Nelson/Marlborough.
After leaving town the trail joined the St. James walkway. A popular 4-day loop track. For us, this means a well graded and formed path. St. James was once a horse station (farm) that the government bought. Wild horses can still be seen. We saw a herd outside of Anne's Hut grazing near the mountain base.
Today we reached the point where our trail leaves the walkway and we continue toward the second highest point on the Te Araroa.
Just when we thought we had seen the last of the South Bounders, we came across 3 more. Most SoBos have told us that over half of the North Island was disappointing. One today told us to think about hiking other trails on our way up. We have tried hard not to think about time and distance left while on the South Island. The beauty and remoteness is too amazing to rush through it. Once we make it to Wellington, we plan to bust out what we can with the time we have left.
