The morning was spent enjoying our last day above tree line for a while. Our view to the North was of the Tasman Sea. A 2 1/2 month wait to get there. The end of the South Island is near. It was a pain in the neck to get there, but it was worth every step. Just before lunch we started the long descent back down. It's amazing what a few thousand feet can do to the landscape. From rocky ledges through grass knobs down to beech forests ending in a tropical forest. Warmer temperatures and lush green fern trees 15 feet tall. The water flowed between moss covered rocks. Shadow and I were expecting to see a monkey swing by.
This afternoon we met 4 more SouthBound hikers. Just when we think we have seen them all, a few more pop up. We spent an hour talking with them before heading on to Browning Hut. The closer you get to town the worst the huts get. We'll miss the mountains, but can't wait to see what's next.
