Shadow and I were thinking today that the last time we hiked with no rain was on our canoe trip. Since then it was rained...and rained. If we are lucky we will see the sun for a few minutes. Since leaving our glowworms our new attitude about hiking here has paid off. Outside of tourism, farming and livestock are NZ's biggest industry. We are finding it nice exploring places that tourist wouldn't normally see due to private property. The trail as been a mix of native tropical forest with fern trees, vines, and wide open spaces for livestock where the rocking hills are exposed.
Last night was spent in our last hut. It was nice to get out of the weather, but not a lot of sleep was had due to a mice chewing through the wood to get inside. From now on we are back to camping on private land again.
The rain continued today turning pastures into muddy, poopy messes. What would have been our water supply was a gross undrinkable stream. We ended up camping in a sheep field with a beautiful view of rolling hill pastures. The bad part is that we didn't have enough water for dinner or breakfast. That includes Shadow's holy grail morning coffee. Another lesson learned. From now on we plan to have more dry meals to save water. One more day to Hamilton for a much needed break to dry out.
