Today was our first day of "Urban Hiking". We set off from the YHA Hostel in downtown Wellington and walked to the cable car for a ride up to the Botanical Gardens. We met a family that was going to have lunch with Geoff Chappell, the gentleman that wrote a book about the Te Araroa and a driving force of the trail. As we made our way through the rolling suburbs the weather deteriorated. The wind began to howl and it started to rain. Our trail took us to a ridge walk outside the city. After checking our maps, we decided to bypass the exposed walk and find a bypass route. I guess that's one good thing about urban hiking. I have a whole list of bad things so far. Top on the list is places to go to the bathroom! We were lucky to have ended the day near Colonial Knob, another exposed section of the trail. We snuck off into the pine forest and found a flat place for the night.
