Ring of Fire

Our alarm clock this morning was a 5.8 earthquake around 6:30AM.  Shadow and I both opened our eyes at the same time and without saying a word, waited for the shaking to stop.  I asked, “Was that an earthquake?”.  To be honest, it wasn’t that alarming.  Large Marge moves around a lot anyway.  My concern was a tsunami.  In 1964 an earthquake drained the Fjord we are camped at and in return a tsunami returned destroying the town.  It took me a while to go back to sleep, but no one was panicking outside.  After breakfast we headed to Exit Glacier about 4 miles away to hike to the top and onto a snow field.  We made it two thirds of the of the way up before stopping due to snow.  Orange flags had been placed to mark the trail to that point.  The snow was about thigh deep on me by the time we stopped on an overlook for a snack.  The view was awesome.  Looking down on the glacier and all around us snow and jagged rocks.  The way back down was the best part.  We simply sat down and slid until we reached the end of the snow and back on the trail.  Snow shoes may be on our Christmas list this year.  Shadow and I spent the evening in the driver and passenger seat of Marge (our RV).  Looking out on the bay watching kids ride their bikes and play at the waters edge while I knit on a scarf and he reads.  What a peaceful way to finish the day.
Before leaving Seward, AK we met Karl for lunch.  He’s a guy we met hiking Exit Glacier the other day.  Karl has an unbelievable zest for life that is easily contagious.  We had a blast with him and hope our paths cross again.  Tonight we are staying 20 miles from our soon to be home for the Summer.  The land has flattened and the trees are blooming.  Lots of Moose and flowing rivers.  I will miss the mountains, but after the busy Winter in Florida, both of us are ready for a small town vibe for while.

Exit Glacier
We need snowshoes!

Thanks for the Photo Karl!
