"You don't tug on superman's cape
You don't spit into the wind
You don't pull the mask off that old lone ranger
And you don't mess around with slim"
We put in our 20 hours of work in 4 days so the Toad was loaded down for some car camping farther South on the Kenai Penninsula. The very bottom to be exact. Homer, AK is a cute small town with limited chain stores. The spit is the famous spot where you can drive out to the middle of the Kachemk Bay. Lots of little touristy shops and ferries to get close to the glaciers. The view of the Kenai Mountains and 3 glaciers are awesome.
Camping on the Homer spit was not one of the smartest things we have done. The wind whipped throughout the night and a few campers next to us partied pretty hard. At 2am Judy and I went to the bathroom. As we walked together towards the bathhouse a bald eagle sat on the roof sizing Judy up for a midnight snack. We scurried into the bathroom before he could swoop. I would say that the sun rose and we got up to leave, but here in Alaska, you have to set your alarm to remember to go to sleep and use an eye mask if you want to stay asleep.
After a nice breakfast in town we headed back North to Halibut Beach where a sign says that we had reached the most Western drivable point in the United States. A nice spot on the beach protecting us from the wind is were we decided to stop. Judy once again ran free on the beach chasing seagulls and bald eagles. The tide came in as we grilled our dinner. Ravens hung from the tree limbs above waiting for a snack. Our evening stroll to the river near by for Shadow to fish turned into a near death experience for Judy. She was off leash again running the river banks chasing birds when she lost her mind and swam across 3 braids of the river. After crossing the second braid we lost sight of her. Shadow gave me the fishing pole and took off after her. I caught a glimpse of her trying to climb the bank after the third crossing, but she fell so I made me way down stream to catch her before going out to sea. Shadow stood on the bank of the third braid looking for her, but could not see her. Finally he heard her yelp. He waded through the thigh deep freezing water to find her clinging to a log. Both soaking wet, he carried her back. As we walked back to his fishing hole a black and white dog 3 times the size of Judy ran over to say hello. It was love at first sight for him. Not so much for Judy since she had almost drowned. For the next 20 minutes we spoke with his owner about the tricks of catching a salmon while Judy was trying to escape what some may call a sexual assault. I took her back to the tent and tendered the fire for Shadow to warm up after fishing. She was like a little kid. Shivering cold, I put her jacket on, gave her something to eat, and snuggled her into our down sleeping bag. She looked at me and if she could talk would say, "Can we go home now?".
