Today we made it to Cape Reinga. The day was beautiful and we didn't want to miss out so we busted up the last few kilometers of SH1. This is a very spiritual place for the Maoris. They believe their souls travel up the country and exit here on the way back to their homeland.
A good weather day was necessary to see where the Pacific meets the Tasman Sea. Both of us expected a giant wave crashing together, but what we saw was better. It looked like a large shallow portion of the sea, but if you looked closer, it was two sets of waves from two different directions.
Our plan was to hike 4 days around the Cape, but multiple locals have advised against leaving our cars overnight. The Far North of NZ, is 80% Maori living in poverty. The only hints we have seen are the shacks that are occasionally seen with beachfront views. Even those are relatively tidy. Now we plan to day hike this section.
Tonight we are camping at Tapotupotu Bay about 3 miles from Cape Reinga on the Pacific coast. Another picture perfect place with green coastal hills, Caribbean blue water, and soft white sand...no shells though.
