Around 8pm the Possums began to howl. Soon they started inspecting our tent and scratching to get our food. Shadow jumped out of the tent and started yelling at them, but they didn't care. A few rocks broke their trance with his headlamp and ran back to the lookout tower. They swung from the scaffolding like monkeys. Before dawn two people came up from town to see the sun rise. They were greeted by the growling of the opossums. We hiked down the mountain ridge and into the town of Huntly for a quick resupply. Before continuing on North.
Our main objective tonight is like every other night here. We look for a safe place to sleep. Tonight we lay by a cooling water discharge from a power plant by the river. Around dusk a truck pulled in and we though for sure we were caught, but it was only a local coming to fish the mullet we had been watching jump during dinner.
April 29th
Today was uneventful. The hum of the power plant last night hid the car and train noise. We walked 20 miles beside the Waikato River which has significant spiritual meaning for the Maori people. Our big adventure of the day was getting nerve to ask a near by house for water. Shadow went to the house only to find that it was empty. Lucky for us New Zealanders are required to collect their rain water. Most houses have large rain tanks. We filled up with water and found a great camp spot by the river for the night.
Today was Joey's 55th birthday. We was in our thoughts.
