Shadow woke early and we were hiking by 5:50am. It was cold out and the cows didn't bother to get up as we walked by. Everyone was still sleeping in the hut too. It was nice to have the trail all to ourselves. We climbed to a pass and our mouths dropped as we saw the trail. Tall white and gray shear rock walls lined the two passes. I'm so glad we decided to camp were we did last night. Slowly we made our way down the chute, crossed the once glacial floor, then back up the other pass through a scree field. Once on top, another hut was cut into the rock face. We slipped in to have a hot cup of coffee and piece of cake before other hikers arrived. It was just what we needed to warm up before continuing our climb to the next pass.
After leaving the hut we looked down the valley and saw a large group of hikers marching up to trail. They looked like ants. All dressed in the same color and spaced equally.
After lunch at the next hut near a beautiful high mountain lake the ants arrived. They were an Italian military troop. What a cool place to train.
As we descended back into a valley the green grass and the white rock's resembled a fairytale. Cute mountain getaways made of wood dotted the emerald hills.
We should have noticed the warning sign before finishing the descent into town. A memorial to Madonna for protection stood at the top of a steep gravel road. So steep, I can't believe cars are able to drive it. This ridiculous road lasted for miles! Our feet ached and our brains were fried after meticulously thinking about every step down the mountain.
