Park Place

February 1st - Day 24
HAPPY BIRTHDAY SHADOW! We celebrated by a hot cup of MILocha (MILO and coffee) and a three pancake cake with raspberry jelly and crunchy peanut butter icing. The occasion was topped off with a candle for Shadow to blow out. Another challenging, but short day to the next hut.
The opossums were out and about last night. Around 1AM I interrupted their party and told them to keep it down. One of them just stared at me from where he at on the hand rail. In NZ they are hunted because they are not native, but also because they blend their fur into the wool to make it soft.
The TeAraroa did not care it was Shadow's birthday. He fell twice. The first was a slip and the second was an all out face plant. Luckily we were near water and the grass was tall and soft.
I completely missed judged Shania's Station size. It's huge! This is our 3rd day hiking through it. With 4 more miles tomorrow.
I was reading a flyer in one of the huts about the native tree species. They have over 6 different types of Beech that have been chopped down for wood or burned. A conservation group is trying to encourage them to grow back. When we come across a small group of them it reminds us of a Tennessee forest.
After arriving around lunch time to Fern Burn Hut we decided that it was too perfect to pass up. We pulled 2 mattresses from inside and laid them on the deck. Our afternoon was spent in the peaceful mountain valley listening to the creek and birds. Around 4pm an few others arrived from town. 2 were a father and son spending the last weekend of summer vacation camping. While making dinner, the son pulled out a deck of Monopoly playing cards. For those of you that don't know. That game is mine and Shadow's favorite. The three of us immediately started talking trash. It turned out to be a great evening.
