3:00AM - Shadow heard something outside so he went out for a look. We left our shoes and hiking poles outside to let them air out and not stink up the hut. He finds an Australian Opossum teething on my hiking pole (photo below).
Today was going to be a tough day. All the notes we printed off had us prepared. One Southbound hiker wrote how he almost pushed his personal locator beacon while hiking that section due to bad weather.
There were two substantial climbs today with beautiful ridge line walks and steep sidles in between. Shadow taught me the art of rest step. A mountaineering move he learned on the Mt. Rainier climb. It was perfect for today and saved so much energy. Lunch was in the only protected area we had today. A Beech Grove with a flowing creek. The rest of the day we were above tree line again with the grasses. We have been so fortunate to have good weather during this section. I couldn't imagine poor weather up here. No wonder Meeno almost called for rescue. I'm not sure they could have if the weather was bad though.
Based on our notes, it seems that Shania had to pay for this trail and the huts in the section. I'm not exactly sure why, but it has something to do with a lease agreement. Speaking of huts, New Zealand has an outstanding hut system. Part of my wishes the US had this many, but I guess people would end up living there. Outside of Martin Hut they all have gutters that hook up to a tank for running water with a sink inside and out. Inside the hut is a large stainless steel counter and large wooden table with bunks that sleep 12. There is also a large deck for enjoying the view. A helicopter must have been used to bring in building supplies. This trail is not a social adventure. It's remote and in rugged terrain. We are in the middle of nowhere and it's perfect.
