Over the Hills and Far Away

May 30th-Started the day with a big breakfast and a decent night sleep. I'm finding that I sleep better in our tent than in a motel or B&B. Tim and Carolyn arrived last night and were excited to be our first victims. The weather was hot, the bugs were out, and the terrian was hard. Our first task was to climb out of the Punchbowl valley and up the Bluff Mountain range, then ride the ridge full of great views. Tim had an excellent eye for wildlife. He found our first rattlesnake. Judging by his rattles, Tim said he was about 3 years old. Next we passed a beautiful moth the size of a dollar bill. Tim and Caroline were troopers in the heat and with the 12 miles of hilly hiking. As for the bugs, they aren't much of a problem until you stop moving. If this is sign of things to come, it's going to be a long summer with the bugs. Shadow built a great fire thanks to Tim and Carolyn collecting wood. It seemed to chase the bugs away enough for us to eat, but it's hard to eat by the fire when you've been hiking in 90 degree heat all day. It was so nice to see some familiar faces on the trail. On to Buena Vista tomorrow for a zero day (no hiking day).
