May 6th- Started the day off around 9:30 back on the trail. Hiked 14 miles to Thomas Knob Shelter. It was a tough climb up to White Top Mtn., but well worth the view. Found a grove of Lady Slippers on the way up and passed a group of trees that the local fire department was using to get maple syrup for fundraising. Then we climbed Mt. Rogers looking for wild ponies. We saw pony poop, pony hair, pony hoof prints, and even a pony skull, but no ponies. As we got settled in the shelter, 3 ponies came within 10 feet of the shelter! What a surprise. I don't want to jinx myself, but so far so good with the new shoes. It's a cold night up on the mountain. Hoping to see more ponies tomorrow.
