Gypsies, Tramps, and Thieves

May 1st - It was a long day hiking. We ended with 17.4 miles. After the early threat of rain passed, the weather (WX) was perfect. Things are beginning to bloom up the moutain. Wild Magnolias, May Apples, Dogwoods, and today we passed 3 wild Orchids. What a treat. After lunch we passed two hikers going the other way. They stopped and asked if one of us was Flute Walker and Country Mouse.  We both looked at each other and said "yes?". Turns out Vicki, the owner of the B&B found our fuel bottle and had to other hikers bring it to us! What a surprise. I was beginning to think we would have all new equipment by the time we got to Maine judging by the way we are losing things. The trail had us cross a monument that was erected in 1925 by the nephew of a hermit that lived on Iron Mountain. Seems he was heading West to seek his fortune, but was robbed before getting there and returned to the mountain. His headstone read, "Lived alone, suffered alone, and died alone". I'm sure he is thrilled that so many pass his way. Can't wait for Damascus in a couple of days, but as usual I'll have no cell phone signal there.
