May 10th- Before departing Atkins we stopped by the only restaurant in town called The Barn to fill up. Shadow reached his daily caloric food intake by eating the 2x4 breakfast and 2 scoops of ice cream. The care package California had sent from Damascus 6 days ago showed up after grocery shopping yesterday so the hiker box at the roach motel was fully stocked. A hiker box is a container at most restaurants, stores, and lodging along the trail that is filled with items that hikers no long want or need. Anything from toothpaste to equipment to food. It's free to take what you need so most stop there before going shopping. The 4 of us hiked an easy 7 miles day. It was a nice relaxing hike enjoying everyones conversations. We crossed the 1/4 way point, and as California said "We are halfway to halfway". By 3:30 we had made camp, purified water, and hung the bear rope. As we sat down for an early dinner near the campfire, a thunderstorm came by and washed our tents.
