August 5 Mile 1549-
Shadow woke me this morning to hear the sound of a rodent chewing on our packs. I was sleeping with earplugs because 11 other people showed up to camp last night. The rodent was a mouse. I unzipped the tent door and threw my shoes at him. I checked my stab wound from the camp fire last night and it was still there... I can't believe I was called old.
Today was a long 18.8 miles. We made the decision to extend our day around mile 13 because we were feeling so good. When mile 16 came around we were kicking ourselves. With no water until October Mtn. Shelter, we were forced to continue.
As we travel farther North we expected to see fewer people, but we were wrong. Summer camps are in full swing and teeny boppers are everywhere.
Our hike had us pass 2 crystal clear lakes. One was Upper Goose Pond. They call these bodies of water ponds, but there lakes to us. This lake had a shelter with a caretaker that serves pancakes for breakfast free of charge. The lake had canoes and a rope swing for visitors. The second lake, Finerty Pond, was harder to get to but just as pretty. Shadow dreams of coming back here with a inflatable kayak and a fishing pole.
We ran into a couple that told us the movie and song Alice's Restaurant was based on a real restaurant about 10 miles from here in Stockbridge, MA. Arlo Guthrie also still lives there.
The trails of Massachusetts have been good to us. In 2 days we will be back above 3,000 feet. The last time we were this high was the Shedandoah National Park.
