Wizard of Oz

August 30 Mile 1803-
We're not in Kansas anymore Shadow. After a nice breakfast at the hotel, Sheila and Mike dropped us off for what turned out to be one of our hardest days out on the trail. The aftermath of Hurricane Irene didn't help. The day was spent slopping thru ankle deep mud, climbing rocks that have were loosened from the soil washing away around it, and slipping on wet tree roots. At one point we use tree branches to stable our descent like monkeys. More than once we climbed rock faces having to use our hands. And during our last descent of the day I choose to scoot down on my butt for fear of sliding. All in all it was a tiring day. A SOBO at camp tonight said "You ain't seen nothing yet". The caretake of the shelter told us that two bridges were out and the water was chest deep this morning. Looks like tomorrow will be just as interesting as today.
