The Great Gig in the Sky

August 26 Mile 1792-
Today was our first day above tree line in the Whites. Mt. Moosilauke (4800 feet)! It was a perfect day. The morning started off foggy, but by the time we passed 3,000 feet the sun was fighting through the clouds. Once on top, you could see the Presidential Range (25 miles above tree line) and Franconia Ridge (Where we will start after Hurricane Irene). Our day was a short, but difficult 9 miles which gave us time for lunch at the top and a stress free descent which was technical and flat out dicey at one point. The trail basically followed a waterfall. Wooden steps were bolted to the rocks that were slippery from the splashes. We made it down in one piece along with some great photos. Tomorrow we head back into the town of Lincoln, NH to weather the hurricane and hopefully meet up with our friends Shelia and Mike for the weekend. Forest rangers were seen today putting up signs saying the White Mtn. National Forest will be closed as of Saturday night due to the incoming weather.
As most of you know our plan was to be at the base of Katadin around September 24th. With the hurricane kicking us off the trail, we have recalculated our finish date to be September 28th, assuming we get back on the trail Tuesday morning. As the days continue we miss our family, friends, and pets more and more. Sometimes being out here is bittersweet.

Wow, one month to go. Amazing. Your pictures are absolutely beautiful. I hope Irene treats everyone well - it will be a part of the hike to look back upon, surely. Travel safe
