August 7 Mile 1578 -
We listened to it rain all night long which was nice. The morning fog and drips from the trees welcomed us back on the trail. 4.5 miles to Cheshire, MA. The plan was to pick up our resupply box with food at St. Mary's church, but the post office hadn't delivered our box. With no grocery store in town we found ourselves at a gas station eating pre-made cold cut sandwiches, sitting on milk crates, behind the store. We were lucky finding enough food to resupply 4 more days.
Our next stop was Massachusetts' highest peak, Mt. Greylock standing at 3,491 feet. As we made our way to the top I had a repeat of lesson # 211 (Hike you own hike). 10 "thru-hikers" passed us slack packing. I know everyone does this hike differently, but it's hard not to compare yourself to them as you lug up the mountain with full weight and they soar past you. Met a SOBO named Beardo. True to his name, the beard touched his belly.
At the top of Mt. Greylock is a small quaint 1930's lodge with 6 rooms. We decided to make it a short day and stay. A private chef served a 4 course meal in the common room at 7PM. The food was good and the shower was needed. It was a perfect reward to a hard day.
