September 2 Mile 1841-
Past Zealand Hut this morning and good thing we didn't push it into there last night. They were turning thru hikers away. Surprisingly we had 3 miles of flat and smooth terrain which helped us make 8.5 miles before lunch. We crossed NH 302 (Crawford Notch) today and started up the Presidential range. Up here you need a plan A,B, and C so we carried water up the climb incase we decided to use plan C. Plan A were the cliffs of Mt. Webster overlooking the valley. B was to push on to Mispah Hut and camp. Plan C... we didn't have. We got to our plan A site around 3pm. We were on top of the world thinking we had made record time and decided to press on to plan B. Unfortunately we hadn't gotten to the Mt. Webster cliffs like we had thought. We decided to continue for the hut, but soon realized it was out of our reach. 3 NOBO behind us had done the same thing. They camped on top of Mt. Jackson and we rolled the dice to find a spot closer to the hut. The sun was setting and a big day laid in front of us for tomorrow. Shadow found the flattest spot he could. We rushed to set up camp and "feed the machines".
Besides summiting Mt. Katahdin, tomorrow is a day hikers dream of. The presidential range is like nothing else. The plan is to wake at 5am and head out by 6am to start our victory lap (aka hike our butts off). Plan A is to make it 13 miles to Madison Hut. Plan B is Edmonds Col and camp above tree line. Plan C is to take refuge at Mt. Washington visitor center, although you can't stay the night.
