September 5 Mile 1871-
I'm not quiet sure how to explain it but we hiked a 13 and a 14 mile day through what was suppose to be some of the hardest terrain and now the past two days have only been able to hike 8.5 miles. Maybe our bodies are tired and ready for a day off. Maybe the word on the street is right about Northern NH and Southern Maine being more technical. It probably a combination of the two. With our last day in the Whites tomorrow we are hoping for better weather. Today has been raining and mostly in the clouds. The climbing here is more like rock climbing and when it's wet, it's treacherous. Our hiking poles just make it worse so we stow them on the climbs. The descents take extra time and for me it's easier to sit on my butt and scoot down the granite slabs. At times it's hard to remember that low mileage through this area is expected. We received word today about a fellow NOBO that fell 100 miles South of Katahdin and broke his leg. His wife is coming to get him. Hearing that reminds us to enjoy everyday out here and not to rush through the technical parts where one slip could send you home.
Our day off awaits us in Gorham, NH on Wednesday. Shadow has scouted out the places to eat and decided, "If there's a KFC in Gorham. I've got to have some fried chicken". If things go as planned, Thursday will be our last day in NH. This will be our last state line to cross. I can't believe it's almost over.
