Are You Sure Hank Did it This Way

July 18 Mile 1331-
What have we gotten ourselves into. After a hot and humid 11.5 mile day, we made arrangements for a zero day in Unionville, NJ. The website described this place as "Where heaven meets earth". Maybe 30 years ago. The owner picked us up on the side of the road. I jumped in the back only to be meet by a large pomeranian that sat as close as he could to me. The whole trip to the motel the dog "Little Bear" pawed my leg wanting me to pet him. I later found out his red rocket was hanging out the entire trip. The owner, Mike, thru hiked in the 80's and by the time we got to the place, we knew his life story. Hot, smelly, and tired all we wanted was a shower and some food. Mike continued to talk for 3 hours about his crazy life. The stories are so bizarre that I had to record him. For an example, he was in Jamaica and saw a beauty contestant he wanted to meet and offer $50 to set up a date for him. It was a drug lord's daughter. After 6 broken bones and a night of torture, a New Jersey lawyer friend got him back the the states. Shadow had the foresight to know this was going to be a long night and had the guy drive us to the beer store. It seems that tonight and tomorrow the entertainment will be us.
Last night we found a great spot on Sunrise Mountain. As the name says, the sunrise was perfect. We entered High Point State Park around lunch. The park is home to the highest mountain in Jersey. The whole 1700 feet plus 220 feet if you count the Washington monument look-a-like on top. On the hike up we could hear hundreds of people playing on the lake that had a beach. Just below the crest we could smell the only smell that describes summer, BBQ grills! The air filled with hotdogs burning on coals. We bushwhacked our way down to the beach and ordered up 2 corn dogs, a batch of onion rings, a couple ice cream sandwiches, and life was a better place.
