Rain on the Scarecrow

July 25 Mile 1395-
The weather today was perfect. Overcast with drizzle all day. Our feet were drenched by the time we made it to Fort Montgomery, NY, but we aren't complaining because creeks are running again. We hiked 1,305 feet (highest point on AT in NY) up Bear Mountain with a 360 degree view of West Point, 4 states, and the NYC skyline. The visibility was too poor for a skyline view. Currently we are 34 miles from NYC. Connecticut (3 days away) has a spot for one last chance of a NYC view. The end of our day took us not only through a trailside zoo, but also the lowest point on the AT (124 feet). The zoo was sad. All the animals hikers see throughout the trail were lock in tiny cages scared or depressed. Coyotes, porcupines, bears, otters, and owls were some of them. Tried to hitch into town for dinner and to pick up a mail drop (food box), but no one stopped. It was a long 1.7 miles at the end of a long 16 mile day.
Lesson #876 expect chaffing after walking 2 days in the rain.
