New York State of Mind

July 24 Mile 1380-
After 2 days off due to the heat wave (108 degrees) we are back on the trail. Our days off were a nice break. We explored the town of Warwick (it's well worth a stop if you are passing through the area), caught up on the Tour de France, and rehydrated. Looks as though we had it pretty good in NJ. Our first full day in NY was a workout. Full of PUDs (Pointless ups and downs). The first half of the day was us trying to find our rhythm, it's amazing how fast you lose it. Most of the water sources along the trail had dried up. We were fortunate that a few of the roads crossing had water jugs for trail magic. It would have been a tough day without the nice people of NY keeping them full. A rain shower came through after lunch and cooled everything down including us. It was too hot for rain gear. The giant rain drops were even warm, but we didn't care. Ended the day at Harriman State Park. The park is one of the most beautiful one we have been through so far. Full of large boulders and tall green grass. It's home to one of the first completed sections of the AT and the Lemon Squeezer (a narrow path between two rock walls). It was the first time we have had to take our packs off to climb the trail. The park is also home to The Long Path A 51 mile hike that takes you to Manhattan. Camping at Fingerboard Shelter this evening. We are the only hikers here, which is nice. As the sunset we watch a deer grazing in the clearing below us.
