July 19&20 Mile 1350-
After another interesting evening at the Country Inn, we headed out this morning to hike in the heat. Looks as though Friday and Saturday will be 99 degrees with a heat index of 105! Our normal time to hike is 6:30am, but the next few mornings we plan to head out before 5am and hope to be done by the early afternoon. Maybe find a creek to lay in during lunch time. This was our last full day in New Jersey and hope to be in New York tomorrow afternoon. Our guide had said NJ was a deli to deli hike and it was pretty close. Today we found a nursery/produce stand. Drenched in sweat and salt crystals sparkling on our clothes we entered the air conditioned building. I grabbed a peach and Shadow grabbed half of a watermelon, then he found a drink we had never hear of. It's an aloe vera water with real fruit pieces. I ordered up the usual, 2 root beer floats. Our mouths drooled as the lady scooped the ice cream. I guess we look desperate because she gave us extra. After rehydrating and finally cooling off, we headed back on the trail to finish our 19 mile day. Shadow and I go to clip our waist belts and our bellies are so distended we have to loosen them.
The heat has taken away our appetites. Our allotted food for the week ends up being carried to our next town. We try to keep the same eating schedule from when it was cooler, but if neither one of us remembers, we just keep walking.
Meet another couple at the Inn last night (Goose and Gypsy Bear). Goose is on his 3rd thru hike attempt. The last 2 were cut short due to Lyme's. That's a reminder for us to check each other constantly. In the evenings we look like a couple of chimpanzee picking bugs of each other. Shadow and I take turns using his reading glasses and a headlamp to see them. Hoping for some relief from the heat next week.
