Thank you for being a friend

July 8th Mile 1200 - We planned our arrival at the 501 shelter around dinner time. It's close to a road which means only one thing...pizza delivery! Just thinking about the greasy cheese, and oily pepperoni on a soggy crust makes my stomach growl. This morning we headed out for a 15 mile day to Eagles Nest Shelter. Around 8am we checked our phone messages and there was one from Flute. She wasn't feeling any better and had decided to end her thru hike. The rest of the day wasn't the same. We had got so close to her and knowing she was going to be absent the rest of the hike got us thinking about who would be next. If 25% of the people finish then statistically we have one more to lose. I feel like I'm on a reality show out here. We were so fortunate to get to know Flute during the last few months and can't wait to catch up with her soon.
Rain started around noon and continued throughout the afternoon. It was too hot for our rain gear, so we were soaked after 6 miles. We didn't care about the rain. It was a nice break from the heat. The down side was the jagged rocks that had turned slippery. No falls, it just hurts the feet and slows us down. We ended our day crossing the 1200 mile mark and pitching our tent in the rain.  9 miles to Hamburg, PA tomorrow for a zero day.
